Euphemia Maclean was burned alive on Castle Hill in Edinburgh by order of King James VI on 15 June 1591 during Scotland’s North Berwick witch trials that became famous because of the King’s personal involvement. It all started when the deputy bailie of Tranent, David Seaton, accused his maid-servant of witchcraft [1]. After torture, she implicated John Fian, Euphemia Maclean, Barbara Napier and Agnes Sampson, who were accused in putting a spell on King James VI at a grand Sabbath in 1590 at North Berwick to try and sink his ship on his return from Denmark where he met his bride. Maclean was also accused of being offered and accepting pain relief during labour by a midwife, Agnes Sampson. Sampson offered Maclean an unspecified powdered substance, a bored stone to be laid under her pillow and some ‘Inchantit mwildis’ (the finger, toe and knee joints of disinterred corpses) [2]. Sampson further instructed Maclean to place her husband’s shirt beneath the delivery bed as it was believed that an item of the husband’s clothing could both ease and hasten the delivery.
